He is a Bradfields hornbill, and friends of ours, Adrian and Amanda Bruce-Miller, raised him from a chick. The little guy has so much character, and, because he was not caged, he flew where ever he pleased, including across to the school and Adrians fathers house nearby, so that he could hang out in the kitchen and get titbits given to him by the cook! Adrian and Amanda have since gone to live in the States, and sadly Fluger has not been seen since. But I am pretty sure he will be living it up with the girls somewhere on the farm, as he was far too clever to have been eaten by something.</p>

This painting was inspired by the Kalahari Desert and the Magkadikadi pans, where one of the largest migrations of zebra and wildebeest in Africa occurs. As with all migrations, the movement of the animals is governed by the coming of the rains, and here the zebra are moving back into the desert in the rainy season to take advantage of the grassy plains which will be full of nutritious food after a long dry winter. </p>

Not just a place for playing, the beach is also the road home, since a lot of the back roads are un-driveable or just plain non-existent. </p>
